HOW TSUMANIS ARE CAUSED
sunamis are caused by sudden movements of large volumes of water, typically in the ocean. These movements are most often triggered by geologic events that rapidly displace the sea floor.
🌊 Main Causes of Tsunamis
1. Underwater Earthquakes
Most common cause
When tectonic plates shift suddenly at a fault line (especially in subduction zones), the seafloor can move vertically.
This displaces huge amounts of water and sends waves outward in all directions.
🔹 Example: 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami
Caused by a massive 9.1 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra.
2. Volcanic Eruptions
Explosive eruptions can collapse part of a volcano or create pyroclastic flows that push into the sea.
These displace water and can generate tsunamis.
🔹 Example: Krakatoa (1883) — one of the deadliest volcanic tsunamis in history.
3. Landslides
Can happen underwater (submarine landslides) or on land (coastal cliffs falling into the sea).
The sudden mass of earth moving into water creates powerful waves.
🔹 Example: Lituya Bay, Alaska (1958) — a landslide-triggered tsunami reached a record height of 524 meters (1,720 feet)!
4. Meteorite Impacts (Rare)
A large asteroid or meteor hitting the ocean would cause an enormous displacement of water.
This is one of the most extreme and rare causes.
🌐 Why Tsunamis Are Dangerous
In deep water, tsunami waves are fast (up to 800 km/h or 500 mph) but low in height.
As they reach shallow coastal areas, the wave slows down, grows taller, and can flood large areas inland.
Often arrive with little warning and multiple waves can hit over hours.
