Water comes from the ground through a process called groundwater extraction, which happens when you pump water from a well. Here’s how it works: 1. Groundwater Storage in Aquifers Beneath the Earth's surface, there are layers of soil, sand, and rock that contain water. These water-holding layers are called aquifers. Rainwater and melted snow seep into the ground, filling the spaces between rocks and soil, replenishing the aquifer. This process is called infiltration or recharge. 2. How Pumping Works A well is drilled deep into the ground, reaching the aquifer. A pump (manual or electric) is installed to draw water up from the aquifer to the surface.
